What I really think is that they were trying to make a judgement over them selves. They weren't happy about the society & they weren't happy about them selves been part, taking part, of that society. Chained men unable to runaway due to their own cowarly. Loving, feeling inside them selves. Unable to realy jump and express those feelings, making passions stronger, they saw them like a huge burning fire or a dark gigantic cloud, unstoppable. And the feelings they couldn't express to the society they described in their books.
